Meaning of ATS
The British trained Palestinian women, both Arabs and Jews, to become officers and NCOs in an Auxiliary Territorial Service . A total of 4,350 Palestinian women between the ages of 20 and 45 volunteered to join the British Armed Forces "for the duration of emergency". Most were discharged in 1946.The women were posted to sixteen ATS units in Palestine, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon. Toward the end of the war a number of ATS were sent to Italy and Austria.
