Sketches of Orchids
Sketching was one of Arthur Shannon's many talents.
At his first teaching position in 1934 his Grade III pupils collected native orchids growing in bushland near the Noble Park Park School , Victoria.
Arthur then identified and sketched the orchids, as shown below.

Note: Due to the large size of the original sheet, three pictures have been taken to ensure that all specimens are shown.
It wouldn't do today ,to collect native orchids in bushland. However, Arthur realized the bush would be taken over by housing estates, and this in fact came to pass as Melbourne's suburbs relentlessly expanded out from the city.

Arthur sketched subjects for his friends during Army service in the Middle East.
He also provided silhouettes of Axis and friendly aircraft to assist spotters to identify them in the Western Desert campaign.
He continued to delight relatives and friends with drawings as gifts for them into the late 1990s. (see below)
